Jauhari Abdul Rosyad: Calligraphy promotes pluralism

 

JauhariIn Indonesia and other Muslim-dominated countries, calligraphy is known as the art of beautiful lettering which draws inspiration from Koranic verses or hadith (the deeds of Prophet Muhammad).

Used as decorations in mosques, and sometimes as a protection against evil spirits in houses, many believe that calligraphy can enhance religiosity.

Cynics say, however, that works or art cannot affect anything, and they might be right as many corrupt officials have works of calligraphy in their offices or houses.
