JIL is an NGO which focuses on social and religious issues. JIL is established to counter the rise of fundamentalism in Indonesia. The rise of fundamentalism in Indonesia is seen by the mushrooming of radical Islamic groups which seek to provoke violence.
JIL, which is founded by young Islamic intellectuals, has three main missions. First, containing religious (Islamic) fundamentalism. Second, preventing the use of Islam to provoke violence. Third, Promoting democracy and human rights and promoting Islamic liberal thinking which puts strong emphasis on pluralism and tolerance.
JIL’s missions are elaborated through the following activities: Establishing network with several medias such as the Jawapos Group and other local medias. Holding talk show programs at 40 radios in Jakarta and other cities. Publishing a website and producing printed publication materials such as bulletin and books and holding discussions at campuses. JIL also holds workshops to improve quality of human resources.
JIL, which is currently supported 10 personnel, has established alliances with the media (newspapers and radio), student groups and other NGOs. JIL also has established relation with funding sources such as the Asia Foundation.
JIL is now facing two crucial problems. First, lack of financial resources and low quality of human resources. If JIL obtains funds funding it will use them to improve human resources and upgrade physical infrastructure. |
