Fahmina is an NGO which focuses on religious issues. The establishment of the organization is due the following concerns. First the spread of improper interpretation of religious thoughts, and lack of tolerance among religious followers. Second, the widespread structural injustice.
Third the failure of religion to speed up social transformation. Religion is only seen as a set of rituals. Even worse religion is used as a legitimacy to oppress people.
Fahmina has two main agendas to be carried out. First, encouraging critical dialogue and discussion on religious issues and accelerating social transformation process. Second, promoting awareness on the importance of giving autonomy to local communities to manage their own resources.
The main agendas will be achieved trough the following actions: Promoting critical thinking particularly fiqh on democracy trough seminars, publication of books, bulletin and magazines. Second, empowering local communities trough training and assistance and through the development of local media. Third, forming multi-tasking groups which focus on public policy and inter religious networking.
Other activities include publishing online and printed publication (website[Fahmina online]). The online and printed publication contain information, articles and opinion about religious and social issues. The online and printed publication also contain articles on how to empower local communities and promote inter-religion dialogue.
To carry out its programs more effectively, Fahmina has established cooperation with other organizations such as the Asia Foundation, Partnership for Governance Reform, Lkis, Desantara, Lakpesdam, P3m, Urban Poor Consortium, USC Satunama, Rahima, Puan Amal Hayati and Jaringan Islam Liberal.
Although Fahmina can carry out its programs, it realizes the need to improve its performance. One thing that should be taken to improve the performance is by is improving its human resources. The other thing is to secure sources of funding which is necessary to carry out its program.
The last thing is fostering relation with other NGOS in Cirebon. Foresting good relation with other NGOs is essential to avoid misunderstanding among the NGOs.
If Fahima obtains funds, it will use them to improve capacity building which includes training for its staffs especially on research methodology, qualitative research, writing skill and management. It will also use the funds for training to improve the staffs’ knowledge on religious, social issues and public policy.
