Rahima is a non governmental organization which focuses on religious (Islam) and gender issues. Islam becomes the organization’s main issue because the religion is held by majority of Indonesia’s population. Gender issues or equality between men and women becomes the organization’s main focus because inequality between men and women is still prevalent in Indonesia. Rahima has a view that the inequality would not exist without misinterpretation of religious teachings.
Based on that view, Rahima has arranged action programs aimed at creating gender equality. The programs cover areas of activities such as training, publication (book, magazine, bulletin etc). Rahima also runs a website (www.rahima.or.id) and a library. Finally, Rahima also conduct research on gender issues.
The organization which is backed by 16 staffs has established cooperation with other NGOs such as the National Commission for Women (Komnas Perempuan), LKAJ, Fatayat, Muslimat NU, Aisyiah, LBH APIK, PSW UIN, LDK (UIN, UNAS), LKBH-IUWK, KPI, Kohati, IMM, Research Groups (Seroja, Fajar Perempuan, Piramida Circle) etc.
Rahima receives funding from the Asia Ford Foundation and the Asia Foundation.
Although Rahima can carry out its programs, it is facing basic problems such as lack of funds and shortages of qualified human resources. If Rahima obtains funds from donors, it will use them to improve quality its human resources and to acquire permanent office. At present, Rahima has to lease an office for its operational activities. |
