LKPMP is a non governmental organization which is involved in education, research and other activities aimed empowering local communities.

As an organization founded by preachers, the organization shares its founders’ concerns: First, lack of contextual understanding in religious teachings among Islamic boarding schools’ leaders. Second, Pesantren has not enough roles to develop its community. Third, people don’t have enough appreciation on environment and local culture.

LKPMP is seeking to increase the role of Pesantren in local community’s development process. It is seeking to encourage greater participation of Pesantren in the decision making process at local communities. It is also seeking to promote democracy, pluralism and gender equality. Finally, it is seeking to promote greater people’s awareness on environmental issues and is encouraging people to actively control government policies on the issues.

The ideas of LKPMP have been elaborated through the following main programs; regular discussion on Islam and democracy in a network of Pesantren Daarud Dakwah wal Irsyad (DDI) and Pesantren As’adiyah in South Sulawesi, and publishing books related to the teachings of DDI. Besides, it publishes magazine and bulletin as well as assisting local communities in legal matters. LKPMP is advocating the Bone people in their fight over land against developer of the Bakaruru power plant. The institute is also helping small-medium businesses in Pinrang to improve their performance.

LPKMP which currently has 15 staffs, has sought an alliance with other NGOs in South Sulawesi such as the NGO forum (FIK Ornop), JARI, NGO coalition (Koss),NGO Alliance (AILO), Church World Service (CWS), DDI, As‘adiyah and Muhammadiyah.

LKPMP receives funding from the Asia Foundation, UNICEF, PACT, IRRI, OTI-USAID,PKM-UNDP, Japan International Development Agency (JICA), the Australian Embassy.

Like other NGOs, LKPMP faces basic obstacles such as lack of financing and qualified human resources. If the institute receives funds it will use them to upgrade skills and knowledge of its staffs as well as improve infrastructure.
