Syarikat Indonesia is a non governmental organization which is concerned with human rights issues. The NGO which was founded two years ago by young Pesantren activists, is terribly concerned with widespread human right violence in Indonesia. The real example is the discrimination against the victims of the 1965 tragedy. They were badly mistreated by the government and the society although they were not involved in the 1965 coup.
Syarikat is actively seeking to find solutions to human right problems. In the case of the victims of the 1965 deadly incident for example, Syarikat has sought to promote reconciliation process. Syarikat believes reconciliation is necessary for the solution to other conflicts. If we can not find solutions to the victims of 1965 incident then it will be difficult for us to solve other problems.
The grand idea is elaborated into detail action programs which include research, mediation, public campaign etc. Other activities include publishing magazine (Majalah Ruas) and books related to the 1965 event.
The organization which currently has 32 staffs has established a linkage network with other NGOs, Pesantren and Islamic organizations.
Syarikat’s main funding source is the Asia Foundation.
Syarikat is presently having a very close relation with established NGOs such Elsam (Jakarta), Lkis (Yogjakarta) and P3M (Jakarta). It also has fostered an alliance with the Nahdlatul Ulama and National Human Rights Commission.
As a new organization, Syarikat faces several basic problems such as financing and lack of qualified human resources. If the organization has enough funding it will use it to improve capacity building such as for training and upgrading office facilities. |
