MADIA is a foundation which seeks to foster inter-religious dialogue. The foundation was established by various organizations such as Paramadina, KWI (Konferensi Waligereja Indonesia)/Indonesian Bishops Conference, Litbang PGI (Persekutuan Gereja-gereja di Indonesia)/ Research and Development institution of the Communion of Churches in Indonesia, IAIN (Institut Agama Islam Negeri)/ The State Indonesian Islamic School Jakarta, and KAIROS (Christian Magazine). In their meeting in November 10, 1995 the organizations agreed to establish a new organization called MADIA or in English SIDA.
MADIA is established because its founders were concerned with a large perception gap among different religious followers. Religious followers are often involved in violent conflicts which arise due to lack of tolerance and because of exclusivity. MADIA is seeking to solve the problems by fostering dialogue among different religious followers. Trough the dialogue it is expected that followers of one religion can understand the position of followers of other religions. One of the dialogues is held at a church in Salemba which was attended by the Hindu, the Buddha and the Christians. The dialogues which are organized by MADIA have given enlightenment to religious followers and have enriched their understanding of theological thinking.
Apart from holding regular dialogue among religious followers, MADIA also works on three main areas: religion, social and community. In religious affairs MADIA is actively promoting inclusive and pluralist Islam. In social affairs, MADIA aims to improve people’s consciousness on morality while its involvement in community is aimed at promoting professionalism among Islamic community. At present only six activists run daily activities of MADIA but dozens of others including several noted figures such as Djohan Effendi, Daniel Dakhidae and Komaruddin Hidayat actively support the organization. They actively attended dialogues which were held in several cities in Indonesia . |
