LKiS is presently known as a publisher of books about progressive Islam but actually the foundation is more than just a publisher. It is an NGO with diversified interests. Apart from publishing books, LkiS is also interested in other issues such as democratization and pluralism. LkiS is keen to strengthen civil society in the country. It also actively takes apart in promoting non violence act.  

LkiS is conducting a range of activities which includes: First publishing a bulletin (Ikhtilaf) which is a medium for promoting progressive and inclusive Islamic values. Second, conducting pilot projects on transformation and tolerance of Islam in Probolinggo, East java. Third, conducting interactive dialogue in Tasikmalaya. Fourth, publishing books about progressive and inclusive Islam. LkiS also hold other activities such talk show in radio and TV.

The foundation which has 30 staffs has nurtured cooperation with other NGOs such as Islam and Civil Society Network, NGO Forum, Jogjakarta , inter-religious dialogue network and Students Network for Reconciliation. It also established a link with Boston University , USA. LkiS receives funding from the USAID, the Ford Foundation and the ASIA Foundation.

As its activities are growing, LkiS needs to improve its performance. However, the foundation sees it is lacking qualified human resources and therefore if it secures funding it will use the funds to improve the staffs’ skills, knowledge and management.
